Fellowship,

Could you tell me the titles of the songs you played on Sunday, Feb 21st? I can never remember enough to find them again. Also, can you do this every week? I think it would be easy to post somewhere on the site. I think 100's of people would find it useful and would really help to promote good music too. Thanks!

I was wanting to fill in the response card and could not find one, I know that I was late in filling it out and hope that I can send this to you,

My heart is drawn to helping out in the sound/lighting side of it, I did it for some time, I steped down to see if there was some where else that God wanted me to be involved in, I ask that you pray with me to see where He wants me the serve.
Thanks Chris

This is too funny. Great idea!
I like the Mac commercial but not as funny as this one.
I wish my church would allow us to be creative like this. I might come and visit sometime. My sister lives in Byrdstown,Tenn.

Thought you did an AWESOME job laying foundational truths for this issue and focusing it in the right place at the end. The church I came from on the west coast has spent years arguing over the issue of women as elders and still is not agreed on what to do -- people have left the church over it, etc. I am so grateful for the humility of the elder board to put unity over a personal sense of "being right".
I think we were sitting behind Pastor Rick in the movie theater this afternoon (watching "UP"). We cried so much, we almost asked for prayer . . .

wow, what an awesome sermon. i have never heard this topic preached so honestly and accuratly. praise God for His word being brought forth without apology. many are fearful to preach on this topic as it can be offensive, but it is "by the fear of the Lord that men depart from sin". realizing God's holy hatred of sin only makes me appreciate the love demonstrated upon the cross. this is the type of preaching that makes men depart from sin.... not your best life now.

Greg,

One correction in your sermon about Hell (I just taught a class on the literary influences on our thinking about heaven and hell). Although demons administered the punishments and seemed to have some authority in Hell, Dante's Satan (called Dis) was punished at the deepest level of hell (he was trapped in ice). Milton's Satan proclaims "It is better to reign in Hell than server in Heaven." It is more from Milton that we get the idea that the Devil owns Hell. Actually, Milton was being ironic and was illustrating the force of Satan's pride to take God's punishment (being cast into the lake of fire) and turn it into a domain where he could rule.

I just wanted to let you all know how much I enjoyed the message preached Sunday.(June 28) It may seem strange to say or hear I enjoyed a sermon about Hell, but it was inspiring. It was the kind of message that I needed to make me bolder to tell others about the "Blessed Alternative", Jesus.
I am a Southern Baptist from MS & was visiting your church with my husband & step-daughter, Mackenzie Everett. (Mackenzie lives in Knoxville.) Thanks again, & I look forward to visiting again in the future.
Sincerely,
Kathy Curley

Response to Greg Pinkner's Sermon "Their Worm Does Not Die."

I previously attended a church that taught that hell was not ever burning, but the final punishment for unrepentant sinners. This continues to be a subject I don't fully understand. The sermon Sunday was excellent (thank you so much), but I still have questions.

Could you please comment on the following scriptures that seem to indicate that hell is not eternal torment?

Malachi 4:1 ..."shall be stubble ... burn them UP ... leave neither root nor branch."
Malachi 4:3 wicked will be ashes under your feet
Ezekiel 18:4 "the soul that sinneth, it shall DIE."
Romans 6:23 "the wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal LIFE ...."
Revelation 21:8 "the second death"

Satan and his demons are spirit beings that cannot die -- so when they are thrown into the lake of fire, they will be prisoners there eternally. Human beings, on the other hand, are not spirit beings and can be burned up. God will not reward them at the resurrection with eternal life, as He will the faithful. The wicked will be resurrected to damnation, and thrown into the lake of fire to be burned up and become ashes under the feet of the saints. The second death.

Another comment ... worm that dieth not ... I had always studied that this referred to maggots that were present in the Gehenna dump site for the bodies of criminals that were thrown in there to be burned up. The worms never died because they became flies and flew away.

I really like the new site. It's easy to use, information easily accessible and very user friendly. I DO however miss being able to look at the bulletin the night or day before to read whatever the teaching is going to be about the next morning and who is presenting it. Anyway that could be incorporated back into the new look? Otherwise, fantastic job!

I stumbled upon the demo site while Googling "fefc" and had a bit of a preview last week. The creativity behind the design (navigation/user interface) is far superior to the previous version. I am EXCITED fan of this new site. Aesthetics appears to be as important as functionality! As my kids would say, "This rocks!" Thanks for a job extremely well done!

I have thoroughly enjoyed downloading and listening to the sermons from your church. My brother is a member there and I live in SC. I was trying to download the last in the series of the Gospel and the Big Three from May 5th but everytime I hit the download button it begins playing the sermon versus downloading. I have never had this happen before so am wondering if the link for downloading needs to be changed. I travel a lot for my job and enjoy listening from my MP3 while driving. If this can be fixed I would appreciate it. Thank you and your church for offering these encouraging and challenging sermons.

I just wanted to thank you for deciding not to put all of the scripture verses on the screens anymore. I have been trying to encourage my teenage sons to look up the scripture during serveice to help them learn the books in the bible better, and now they do have to search their bibles to find them. Having the verses on the screen was also my husband's excuse for not bringing his bible, so I am hopeful that we will all be toting our bibles to church now!!

GREAT Sermon!! I do not go to your church but I will visit it. So refreshing to hear exegesis preaching of the Word of God. It is so good to hear this type of preaching in Knoxville. I am so tired of feel good, funny stories, stats, psyco babble "preaching".

Great start to the new sermon series. One of the things I love about the teaching at Fellowship Church is the willingness to confront the materialism of modern American culture, and this is done with a congregation that likely enjoys a standard of living that is well above average. Its very encouraging that the leaders of the church are brave enough to challenge their congregation in such a way.

I enjoyed reading about your ministry there in Knoxville.
My Daughter and her family are moving there in October. My wife and I will follow them there in the early Spring. Maybe we can come for a visit. I am a worship pastor and will be searching Gods heart for my next ministry assignment as well. I'll pray for you, Please pray for me.
God Bless.

Awesome sermon! Given with humility and presented in a way that the “average bear” could grasp onto, take, and apply to their walk with the Lord. I truly appreciate the fact that there was no “hand slapping” condemnation, or guilt thrown around at those who may not be spending as much time in the Word. Instead it was presented as an invitation to a feast that we all should be running to and inviting others to as often as we can. I left church wanting more, and the practical tips at the end of the sermon will help me achieve that. Thank you. I believe you have a gift for ministering to adults as well as high school students. I am glad you shared it. 9/2/07

May God grant you favor as you wait, and may He reveal more of who you are in Him during this journey. I trust your team will find new purpose in this adventure! God Bless, Kevin

I go to Fellowship and I have been for over a year, this is the first time that I have visited this website and I was actually at this service. I have wanted to visit this site for some time now but never thought of it while I was on the internet. I think it is really awesome that you put the services on this webpage because now I can listen to them again after I go on Sunday. It really helped me to grasp the message when I listened to it again and it made me realize that I miss a lot of the message in the service while I am there. Thank you.

It really helped me to grasp the message when I listened to it again and it made me realize that I miss a lot of the message in the service while I am there. Thank you.

I enjoyed this sermon. According to Augustine and Aquinas, evil is a privation of good. So, one could restate Greg’s comment in the following terms. Our ‘good’ actions are a privation of good before God. In the sermon, he also points out that this lack of goodness is not to be seen merely as a quantitative lack. It is not as if we just need God to add that extra 50% to tip us over into goodness. While Platonic dialogues always refer to the difference between appearance and reality, they also point out that the real issue of the Good in and of itself can only be addressed when you consider the orientation of the soul itself and not just the external showing of obedience to laws. There is something disordered in the soul. In Christian terms, we need the grace of God to continually help us so that the actions that flow out of our soul can be used for good. A reorientation/reordering of the soul is fundamentally different than completing a checklist of ‘good’ actions wherein the emphasis becomes what I have achieved instead of the glory of God.
On a side note, I thought the reference to the French existentialists fitting for the larger topic of the goodness of human actions. All of those guys, Camus, Sartre, and de Beauvoir really struggled with whether or not the so-called good actions we performed were not in some way inherently violent. Camus’ The Plague is a great novel that really articulates this struggle from a secular standpoint.

Hello,
Just a couple of comments on an excellent sermon that really made me stretch my mind......
Are good deeds, good works, the people do before salvation "evil?"
The OT is replete with exhortations to do the righteous, right, proper, good, obedient thing so that blessings can be given.
I guess I am merely saying that "worthless" might be a better word. They really don't count for anything. However, they may help, encourage, support, uplift, heal another human being.
If "evil" can be defined as the deeds people to do heal and help and feed and to nurture, I guess I am not sure what evil really is.....
Second, I bet 40 people have told you that the FRENCH author Camus is not pronounced Kam-us. (French is nearly impossible to figure out at times.....!) How about "Cam-oo." That is the closest you might get to the sound of the French rue and the German fuehlen.
I really appreciate all the thought you put into messages and how to make all of us really think!!!
May the Lord continue to bless you in your gifts!!

I know that Greg was not disparaging philosophy at the beginning of the sermon. That said, my comment centers around expounding a point that he made in passing in order to counterbalance his statements regarding the 'foolishness of philosophy'. Namely, that it is important to think about the nature of existence etc. So what is the role of philosophy in finding meaning etc.? Greg suggests that we cannot use philosophy to explain Christ; I assume he means philosophy cannot fully grasp or circumscribe who and what Christ is. Most people don’t ‘accept’ Christ into their heart on the basis of a logical argument. Besides, philosophy can be (not always) misused in such a way as to encourage contemporary Pharisees. There are those who use philosophy to explain Christ so as to defend their own barricades while attempting to conquer others. They may present a fine eloquent exterior while they talk at people. Meanwhile, talking at people doesn’t acknowledge the heart of the person that only God can circumcise. On the other hand, studying philosophy can be an act of faith, worship and hope; as, God throws open the sepulcher of one’s heart and digs out the stench of swallowed false beliefs and its byproduct of disordered intentions. There can be apathy in the soul of man that yields many sins of omission—an apathy fed by non-reflectively living by the presuppositions of one’s culture. God showing you that apathy is a painful cutting away of dead flesh-a life long process. Strangely, it is in the cutting that we come to be more present, that we learn what it looks like to actively engage in loving God and others.
