How To Use This Site
If you are needing assistance in using the FEFC website, you have come to the right place. On this page we explain many of the key features of this website:
The Big Picture
The FEFC website consists of two main components: 1) a blog and 2) static pages.
1) What is a blog?
If you are new to the term blog, it is the shortened form of weblog, and to put it simply a blog is a web publishing format for frequently updated content. You will find the blog portion of the FEFC website on the home page. In the FEFC Blog, we typically post church-wide announcements and sermons from our Sunday morning worship services. In addition, should you ever wish to add your thoughts to a post, if commenting is turned on for the post you are reading, you can add a comment for everyone else to read.
Our blog also features a feed which offers two subscription methods so you can keep track of updates via email or RSS. For more information, see the section titled Subscribing to the FEFC Blog.
2) What is a static page?
Static pages are web pages which feature content that does not need to be updated too frequently. In other words, static pages feature static or non-changing content. Our Statement of Faith is a good example of a static page.
You can access static pages on this website via the main menu found at the top of every page on the FEFC website (currently this menu features buttons for Home, About, Ministries, Missions, Archives, and Contact). After clicking on a main menu button, if the main menu page features subpages (i.e. pages that are hierarchically subordinate to a main menu button), you will see these subpages listed in the subpages menu found in the column on the right. For example, in our ministries section, we group subpages for specific FEFC ministries.
Subscribing to the FEFC Blog
You can subscribe to the FEFC Blog via email or RSS (i.e. Really Simple Syndication).
Subscribing via email
When you subscribe to the FEFC Blog via email, you will receive an email whenever we update our blog. This email will contain:
- the titles of recently added posts, and
- short excerpts from those posts.
In your email, you can click on the titles of the articles to come directly to the article on the FEFC website. To subscribe to FEFC website email updates, use the “Subscribe via email” form in the right side column.
Using Really Simple Syndication
RSS or Really Simple Syndication is a means of easily distributing or publishing content on the Internet. You can think of the RSS feed for this website as something similar to a radio signal that we broadcast across the Internet. And, just as there are many different types of devices for consuming a radio signal (e.g. portable radios, car stereos, Walkmans, etc), there are many different softwares that consume or display RSS content.
Clicking on either the Subscribe to Posts or Subscribe to Comments links on the top of this website will display the RSS feed for either of those respective types of content. Depending on whether or not you are using a modern web browser, you will either see a lot of code (this means you have an older browser), or you will see a listing of recent posts or recent comments along with an option to subscribe to the feed using the RSS reader of your choice.
RSS readers allow you to subscribe to multiple RSS feeds and consume their content (e.g. blog posts, audio, video, etc.) from one common interface. In other words, using this common interface lets you look at content from multiple websites without ever having to visit the websites. The radio analogy works here too as you can think of a radio allowing you to listen to multiple radio stations without you ever having to physically visit a radio station to hear what is going on in studio.
If you are interested in learning more about RSS and RSS readers, we suggest searching on Google for RSS or RSS reader. Or, if you would like to upgrade your browser so you can start experimenting with RSS, the webmaster for this site recommends the Firefox Web Browser.
